Overview
Why ISSN?
An ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is a unique 8-digit code used to identify continuing resources like newspapers, journals, magazines, and periodicals. Managed by the ISSN International Centre, it ensures seamless cataloging and tracking across libraries and databases globally.
Format and Structure
An ISSN is written as the acronym "ISSN" followed by two groups of four digits, separated by a hyphen (e.g., ISSN 1234-5678). The eighth character is a "check digit" calculated using a modulus 11 algorithm, which can sometimes be the letter "X". Unlike an ISBN (which identifies individual book editions), an ISSN identifies the entire serial publication itself.
